Kennon L. Callahan, Giving and Stewardship in an Effective Church: A Guide for Every Member. Jossey-Bass, 1997.

LifeandLeadership.com Summary

Kennon Callahan’s resources on church leadership are among the most widely used inter-denominationally. This volume is part of his Twelve Keys library, and one may wish to be familiar with at least the first volume, Twelve Keys to an Effective Church, to understand his approach. A complete listing of the Twelve Keys approach may be found on the Amazon Kennon Callahan page, or this site’s Callahan summary.

This text works well alongside Callahan’s companion volume, Effective Church Finances. Callahan follows his standard foundation for churches to prayerfully and biblically discern their mission, and then create a plan to increase giving and stewardship to fund their missional goals. He says, “As you grow the mission, you will grow the giving. And as you grow the giving, you be in a stronger position to focus your best energies on the mission.” (6) Callahan unfolds a four-step method for increasing giving and stewardship: grow the principles for giving, develop the possibilities for giving, advance the motivations for giving, and build your understanding of stewardship. Each of the four steps is carefully outlined with action worksheets and other tools. Whether a church uses this as its primary resource in a stewardship project or not, the leaders would benefit from exposure to these insights. It can also be used as a study guide for Bible classes and small groups.
