LifeandLeadership.com Summary

This volume reflects the findings of an Alban Institute task force on the phenomenon of “Redevelopment.” In the study, they chose a number of congregations that seemed beyond the point of recovery due to factors such as the high median age of members and other demographic limitations. Mann tells the story of many of these congregations, chronicling the realistic struggle as well as the recovery of hope experienced by churches that executed the approaches presented in the book. Mann does a good job synthesizing congregational theory and stories of renewal. She presents a methodical and church-friendly process. This book will be especially valuable for small churches or others that are on the demising range of the congregational life cycle. Smaller churches may benefit more than larger.

From the Publisher

Nothing on earth lives forever—not even congregations. Alban Institute senior consultant Alice Mann explains how the natural life cycle of a congregation, as well as other internal and external factors, can produce a congregation that is in real trouble. She then offers hope for congregations that want to change. Practical options for congregations, leadership challenges for laity and clergy, and ways to work with denominations are detailed and engaging discussion questions provide a basis for congregational planning. Foreword by Anthony G. Pappas.

About the Author

Before joining the staff of the Alban Institute, Alice Mann served for two decades in the dual roles of local pastor and nationally recognized consultant-trainer in the field of parish development, with emphasis on incorporating new members; redeveloping struggling congregations; defining judicatory roles in growth and revitalization; breaking through size plateaus; and deepening parish spirituality. She frequently assists churches with self-assessment, long-range planning, and the development of context-sensitive strategies for growth. In training workshops and planning retreats, Alice-engages large and small groups in practical learning and candid conversation about the choices church leaders face today.
