LifeandLeadership.com Summary

This three-volume sequence is no longer in print, and is hard to find, but it is one of the best basic training mechanisms on conflict management for church leaders.

  • How To Manage Conflict In The Church, Volume I: Understanding & Managing Conflict – This book makes three contributions. First, it includes a conflict styles inventory that allows partcipatnts to understand their tendencies in conflict, both healthy and unhealthy. Second, it uses a conflict levels typology to explain how congregational conflict grows and escalates. Third, it presents the baseline principles for conflict management.
  • How To Manage Conflict In The Church, Volume II: Conflict Interventions & Resources – This book gives you step-by-step plans for actually intervening in specific conflict situations (e.g. one-to-one, small group, large group). The plans are supplemented with selected readings and exercises. It is a “tool kit” for use in conflict situations.
  • How To Manage Conflict In The Church, Volume III: Dysfunctional Congregations – This book leads you into an understanding of dysfunctional conflict situations and gives you an entirely new set of tools and approaches for working with dysfunctional persons, groups and conditions. Conflicts that grow out of dysfunctional relationships are different from all other types of conflict, and require entirely new tools and responses.
